Balloon tamponade is done to temporarily control life-threatening hemorrhage from gastroesophageal varices. It is only a temporizing measure before definitive therapy like endoscopy, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt or surgery is done.

Jugular Venous Oximetry
Jugular venous oximetry or jugular bulb oxygen saturation (SjO2 or SjVO2) is a tool which represents a balance between the supply [cerebral blood flow (CBF)] and the need [cerebral metabolic requirement of oxygen (CMRO2)].
Umbilical Vascular Catheterization.
In neonates, especially in preterm babies, peripheral veins are commonly friable and finding an intravenous access is often difficult. Conventionally, placing a central line in a neonate is both exigent and difficult.
Aerosol therapy refers to the delivery of a drug to the lower airways in an
aerosolized form for either local or systemic effect.
Flexible bronchoscopy has become one of the most frequently performed invasive procedures in respiratory medicine. Since its introduction, flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope (FOB) has become the instrument of choice because of its ability to safely visualize and biopsy bronchial lesions.
Fiberoptic intubation with preserved spontaneous breathing is considered
the safest and most effective technique for elective intubation in patients with an anticipated difficult airway.
The development of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary
embolism (PE) remains a daily concern for physicians who care for
critically ill patients. Diagnosing PE is challenging in the intensive care
unit (ICU) because signs and symptoms are nonspecific. In greater than
two-thirds of patients, acute PE occurs prior to the diagnosis of DVT.
Tracheostomy is one of the most common procedures that the intensive care unit (ICU) patient population will undergo. Bedside open tracheostomy (BOT) has become an attractive option for critically
ill patients; it obviates the need for transport to the operating room,
has been shown to decrease costs, and can be done safely.
Tracheostomy tubes are curved tubes inserted through an opening created in the patient’s neck which passes into the upper trachea. They are therefore infraglottic airways.
A pacing system is defined as a medical device used for treatment of bradycardia or heart failure; it comprises the device itself and implanted leads.
